Golden Shears

The Golden Shears Championship is the world's most prestigious sheep shearing event.

It is held in March each year in Masterton, New Zealand, it is the culmination of the national shearing circuit.

First held in 1961, there are now several levels of competition in shearing, wool handling and wool pressing. The Golden Shears Championship was the first sheep shearing competition of its kind and is credited with the spread of shearing as a world-wide sport.

The premier title is the open championship in which the finalists must shear three types of sheep (fine wools, long wools and second shear). The shearer with the lowest time-based score is the winner. David Fagan has dominated the main Open Championship in recent years.
